According to rahnam International News Agency, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in an interview with France 24 that the withdrawal of the United States of America from the JCPOA in 2018 has caused the “uncertainty” of the agreement.
The Director General of the Atomic Energy Agency said: “We reached this agreement (JCPOA), but the agreement entered a kind of uncertainty after the United States withdrew from it in 2018, and after that, Iran, by not adhering to this agreement, took retaliatory measures. started.”
After the withdrawal of the United States from the JCPOA nuclear agreement, the Islamic Republic of Iran started to reduce its obligations by referring to the clauses of the JCPOA due to the deviation of the western countries from fulfilling their obligations in this agreement. Iran’s actions have been carried out under the provisions of the JCPOA, which allows Iran to reduce its nuclear obligations if any of the parties do not comply with the provisions of the agreement.
Grossi claimed that Iran’s actions were “retaliatory”. He said: “After that, Iran started retaliatory measures, including uranium enrichment, which is cause for concern. “I don’t want to get too technical, but when you get to a level of enrichment for an isotope of uranium, you get material that can be used in a bomb.”
The Islamic Republic of Iran has always emphasized the peaceful nature of the country’s nuclear program in response to Western countries accusing Tehran of trying to obtain nuclear weapons.
Grossi said: “And this is despite the fact that Iran is not a country possessing nuclear weapons. Iran is a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, therefore, Iran should be covered in this sense. There are many questions about Iran’s nuclear program that we must work with Iran to solve.”
He added: “We are an international organization that believes in diplomatic solutions to problems, but here we are facing a situation where things have reached a point that we did not want to be here.”
The Director General of the Agency added: “Iran has the nuclear materials (necessary for making weapons), which is very important because only countries with nuclear weapons have these materials.” Regarding Iran, having these materials does not mean having nuclear weapons, but they have certain capacities that cause concern.”
Grossi clarified: “I have traveled to Iran many times and have talked with President Raisi and Amir Abdollahian. They always say they are confident their intentions are peaceful. Of course, we believe everyone, but we verify everything and we have to do this.”
