The functionalist hotel in the center of Brno by architect Bohuslav Fuchs still attracts guests not only with its unique architecture. The biggest attraction of Hotel Avion, which was established in 1982, is the plot on which it stands. It is only eight meters tall. Originally, a classicist house with a small inner courtyard stood on the site. Fuchs therefore had to come up with an economical solution to convert the space into a hotel.

The well-known building with a ceramic facade and reinforced concrete construction seems very inconspicuous at first. But when it fits inside, its advantages are immediately apparent. The advantage is, for example, separately accessible parts, which include a hotel with a reception and a restaurant with a cafe.
One of the dominant elements of the cafe part of the hotel’s interior, which permeates the first two floors, is a staircase lined with an organically arched border, which is complemented by an impressive handrail. The entire interior is also distinctly colorful. The reason is primarily the architect’s inspiration from the Dutch De Stijl movement. The interior spaces are also well lit thanks to a large number of skylights and large sliding windows.

Hotel Avion has been closed to the public since 2010. It began to be renovated in 2016 and reopened late last year. Guests can stay in 37 rooms with 77 beds. The rooms on the highest floors offer beautiful views of the Moravian metropolis.
The first four floors of the hotel are open to the public. They are to serve as a museum dedicated to Fuchs. In these spaces, visitors can learn about functionalism in general and other architects from this period. People can also visit this part of the hotel with a guide.
