Australian actor Russell Crowe will probably come to the film festival in Karlovy Vary. He wrote on his official Twitter account on Thursday that on June 30, when the event starts, he will present his show called Indoor Garden Party in Vary. It is a composed evening of spoken word and music. The organizers have not yet confirmed his participation.
Fifty-nine-year-old Crowe has been involved in music on the side since the 1980s, when he was the lead singer of the Australian rock band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. Today, he performs under the banner of the Indoor Garden Party collective of songwriters and musicians who occasionally perform concerts with the fifty-three-year-old Canadian musician Alan Doyle and friends. In 2017, they released an album called The Musical.
Russell Crowe became famous in Hollywood in 2001, when he won an Oscar for the role of General Maximus Decimo Meridia in the historical blockbuster Gladiator. In addition, he acted in the award-winning dramas Insider: The Man Who Knew Too Much, Pure Soul or Master & Commander: The Other Side of the World. He has also been directing for the last ten years, he was the first to shoot the film Path of Hope in 2014, and last year he released his second film Poker Face, about poker players.
Most recently, Crowe portrayed the Italian priest and exorcist Gabriel Amorth in the horror film The Pope’s Exorcist, which is still showing in selected Czech cinemas.
This year’s Karlovy Vary festival will start on June 30 and last until July 8. He will mention, among other things, independent Iranian cinema and the work of Japanese director Yasuz Masumura, who lived from 1924 to 1986. “He was the first Japanese filmmaker to study film in Rome and enriched Japanese film production with a new style. Among his many foreign fans were Michelangelo Antonioni,” explained the artistic director of the festival, Karel Och.
Actress Daniela Kolářová will receive the President’s Award. In her honor, the famous comedy Ball Lightning from 1978 will be shown in Vary. “She deserves the award for her huge filmography, she is one of the busiest and most popular actresses not only in film and television, but also in theater. The choice was very right,” explained festival president Jiří Bartoška.
Among the most famous guests of last year were the actors Geoffrey Rush, Benicio del Toro and Liev Schreiber. Bolek Polívka received the President’s Award.
