Eight people died in a nighttime fire in building cells in Plotní street in Brno. The fire broke out after 2:00 a.m. Firefighters extinguished it before 7:00 a.m. Police and firefighters will now investigate its cause. Police spokesman Pavel Šváb said that there were 12 linked so-called unimo cells. Firefighters battled the blaze for much of the night.
“The fire probably started after 2 a.m., we arrived at the scene at 2:30 a.m. and started extinguishing it with four water jets,” said Jan Dvořák, spokesman for the South Moravian fire department. Firefighters dismantled structures and extinguished hidden fires until morning.
Rescue workers were also on the scene. “We sent three vehicles, including a traffic inspector, to the scene, but there was no one we could help,” said Michaela Bothová, spokesperson for rescuers.
