Adam Hložek scored the winning goal in Leverkusen’s 2-0 win over Leipzig in the German Football League and helped bring Bayer back to the top of the cup.
The Czech representative followed up on Thursday’s goal from the Europa League and became the Bundesliga’s top scorer for the fifth time this season.
Hložek opened the scoring in the 40th minute after a quick and straightforward action. Andrich encouraged the home speedster Diaby to run, who caught his pass just before the end line, with the first touch he sent a ground cross to Hložka, who also without preparation sent the ball behind the goalkeeper Blaswich with his left foot.
The visitors had more of the game in the second half, but five minutes from time Szoboszlai tripped the home side’s Frimpong in the box and substitute Amiri converted the penalty. In addition, the Hungarian representative received a second yellow card for the intervention and had to leave the field of play.
Leverkusen did not lose for the eighth time in a row and returned to the sixth place securing participation in the European Conference League. He came within three points of the fifth-placed Leipzig, and the seventh-placed Mainz has a two-point advantage.
Freiburg outclassed second-to-last Schalke at home with Alex Král 4-0 and moved ahead of Leipzig in the positions for participation in the Champions League. Gregoritsch scored twice, Höler and Ginter added one each. The king played the entire game for the visitors from Gelsenkirchen.
