At the end of March, the chairman of the ODS parliamentary club, Marek Benda, smoked an electronic cigarette on board the government special, which was taking the delegation of the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Markéta Pekarová Adamová (TOP 09) on a foreign trip to Taiwan. The pilot had to urge the longtime member of parliament to stop smoking, otherwise he would have to make an emergency landing.
Smoking cigarettes, including electronic ones, is prohibited on board. If cigarette fumes were picked up by the smoke sensors, the plane would have to make an emergency landing.
“The undesirable behavior of a member of the delegation really occurred, and after the captain’s call over the intercom, it was corrected and he did not continue smoking,” said army spokesman Ivo Zelinka to Deník N, which reported on the case.
One member of the delegation, who did not wish to be named, told the newspaper that Captain Bendu had warned that if he did not stop immediately, he would be forced to make an emergency landing in Cambodia. Benda himself did not want to comment on the incident.
The fact that the captain had to warn the head of the ODS deputies about inappropriate behavior was confirmed by Deník N and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Markéta Pekarová Adamová. “According to my information, it was an IQOS device, which is allowed in some facilities and is not considered to be cigarette smoke. Given that nothing like that happened after the warning, the captain did not deal with it in any way,” said the head of the delegation.
At the end of March, Pekarová met, for example, the president of Taiwan, Tsai Jing-wen, and spoke in parliament. She was accompanied by the most numerous business mission to date, which included dozens of company representatives. In total, around 150 people took part in the trip to East Asia.
