The Czech women’s ice hockey players lost 1:5 to home team Canada in the second duel at the World Championship in Brampton.
In the first-ever match with twelve-time world champions and five-time Olympic champions, Natálie Mlýnková was able to answer Marie-Philip Poulinová’s opening goal in the 19th minute, but then Renata Fastová, Blayre Turnbullová, Poulinová and Laura Staceyová secured the victory for the favorites.
The next duel in Group A, which they entered with a 2:1 overtime win over Japan, awaits the team of Canadian coach Carly MacLeod on Sunday until 21:00 CEST against the United States of America.
In the beginning, the Canadian Škodová caught the attempts, who in the 6th minute had to cover O’Neill’s chance even with a Czech power play. After that, Mrázová and Mills got their chances. At 8:03, the home favorites rejoiced when Poulinová beat the Czech goalkeeper with a backhand bluff and scored her jubilee 100th goal in the Canadian national team. She managed it as fourth in history after Hayley Wickenheiser (168 goals), Jayna Hefford (157), Danielle Goyette (114).
The Czech team defended itself when Vanišová was sent off and equalized at 18:37. Mlýnková shot Desbiens through the concrete from the left circle. In 25 seconds, however, the Canadians responded when Fastová beat Škodová from a position behind the right circle through the screen.
In the middle part, the Czechs defended themselves against three weaknesses due to the penalties of Neubauerová, Lásková and Šapovalivová and finally collected 63 seconds before the second break. Larocque’s shot from the blue line was tipped by Turnbull.
At the turn of the second and third period, the Czech team did not use the numerical advantage and in the 43rd minute Poulinová increased the score with her second goal of the match. After three penalties by the Canadian women in quick succession, the Czech selection played a total of 74 seconds in a five-on-three power play, but did not see a reduction. The result was completed by Staceyová, whose attempt was deflected in front of Škoda’s leg by Lásková.
