Tennis player Marie Bouzková did not manage a three-set duel with Cristina Bucsaová in the opening round of the tournament in Charleston. The 16th-seeded Czech lost to her Spanish opponent on the green clay in South Carolina after almost three hours 5:7, 7:6, 1:6 and lost the second match against her.
Twenty-four-year-old Bouzková, who is ranked 36th in the world, lost the opening set in the end. In the twelfth game, she lost serve for the second time in the match and the opponent, who is 45 places lower in the WTA ranking, took the lead 1:0.
In the second set, both players did better on the return. Bouzková was the first to hold her serve, but then she did not use two break points to make it 5:2 and her opponent turned the score around. The Czech still fought for a tie-break in the end, which she clearly won 7:3 and tied the match. But Bucsa confidently entered the third set, quickly took the lead 5:0 and did not let the progress be taken away.
For Bouzková, this is already the tenth loss of the season, she has only six wins to her credit.
Linda Fruhvirtová is the only Czech player in Charleston in the second round. Her next opponent will be world number 172 Caroline Dolehide. Today, the American beat the German Sabine Lisicka 6:4, 6:4.
